Learn What To Do With Bleeding After An Extraction With Rockville MD Dentist

By Lakisha Curtsinger

Following a tooth extraction, there is a certain amount of blood to be expected. Usually, the amount is small but when it mixes with saliva it may look like more than it actually is. If you do notice an increase in bleeding however, there a few tips your Rockville MD dentist can offer.

First, make sure to use the gauze pads that the dentist provided. Typically, the pads should be used for three or four hours. They should be changed every thirty to forty five minutes as they become blood soaked. It is not unusual for your dentist to suggest using a damp plain black tea bag to help stop bleeding. Often the tea bag is more effective than the gauze.

You should not rinse or spit forcefully for 24 hours. Rinsing or spitting can start the socket bleeding again. You should also not drink from a straw, because the suction created can cause the socket to start bleeding. Also avoid hot items, especially soup, tea or coffee. If you must have caffeine, drink iced tea or coffee instead.

If you play any type of wind instrument, ask your dentist when you can start practicing again. This is another thing that can create pressure and start more bleeding.

If you have severe bleeding or pain four hours after the extraction, you should call your Rockville MD dentist. By this point, a clot should have formed in the socket to stop the bleeding. This can take longer with wisdom teeth - but it is better to call your dentist if in doubt. If it is not serious enough to warrant going back in, they will let you know.

Above all, follow your dentists' instructions for aftercare for reducing bleeding and promoting healing, and remember that the amount of blood can look much greater than it is for any bleeding in the mouth.
